Opening Huygens building

Official opening ceremony

During the opening ceremony on May 8 2007, her Majesty Queen Beatrix set the Foucault's pendulum in motion and she received the first copy of the Huygens building book. Together with a selected audience, the queen attended a performance entitled "de Huygenssuite", by Theatergroep Adhoc. She visited laboratories and had dialogues with students and employees of the Science faculty.

The Foucault pendulum

The big Pendulum of Foucault in the entrance of the Huygens building gives a nice demonstration of the rotation of the earth. It looks as if the axis of swing of the pendulum would make a full turn in a bit more than 30 hours and 30 minutes (due to the northern latitude of Nijmegen). In reality, it is the earth which rotates "under the pendulum", while the pendulum itself conserves its orientation with respect to the universe, thanks to its momentum. Listen to the explanations on the mechanism according to which the pendulum works in the video of Professor Jim LaBelle (Darmouth; engelstalig), read furher explanations on the specific Nijmegen pendulum, or follow further details on the mathematics and physics of the phenomenon.
