Upperview of the archegonia on a prothallium of a fern. Each archegonium produces a single egg cell. The upper and lower picture show the same archegonia but at a different focus level. After fertilization of the egg cell the zygotes gives rise to an embryo that at the beginning of its development depends on the gametophyt for nutrient supply.
