Cross-section through a dicot root. The vascular cambium that builds secondary xylem (to the inside) and phloem (to the outside) has developed between the primary vascular xylem and phloem. In the outer layer of the pericycle the cork cambium develops which will form cork and cause degeneration of all (endodermis and cortex) tissues located outside the pericycle.
